Helianthus Annuus Sunflower Seed Extract Description
(sunflower) seed extract is made from the pressed seed meal of sunflower kernels. It’s a multi-benefit ingredient proven to help protect skin and hair from environmental damage. This isn’t surprising when you consider what a treasure trove of antioxidants and polyunsaturated fatty acids are found in sunflower seeds. Among the nutrients are various tocopherols (forms of vitamin E), polyphenolic antioxidants, minerals such as selenium, copper, and zinc, and amino acids.
Typical usage level in cosmetics ranges from 0.024–0.05%, with higher amounts typically used in leave-on moisturizers and lower amounts used in soaps, shampoos, and conditioners. These amounts are considered safe for use in cosmetics, but this ingredient should be considered carefully if you have a known food allergy to sunflower seeds.
Outside the cosmetic realm, newer research has shown sunflower seeds have antimicrobial properties capable of making water safer to drink in countries without widespread access to clean tap water.
